When Touko Helanen and Janika Tuunainen left behind the calm landscapes of Finland for the bustling energy of Mumbai, they knew they were stepping into a world of contrasts. With their two young children, Lila (3.5) and Eeli (2), the couple sought a global upbringing that would immerse their family in diverse cultures. What they found in India was far removed from the stereotypes often portrayed abroad.

Touko, an educator and media professional, now teaches at the Finland International School in Mumbai, while Janika, a dance teacher and gymnastics coach, also contributes to the school community. Together, they share their experiences on Instagram under the name The Findian Family. Their recent video, filmed against Mumbai’s glowing skyline, resonated with viewers worldwide. “Think you know India? Look again,” Touko said, emphasizing how their daily life reveals a side of India rarely highlighted in global media.

For them, India is not just chaotic or overwhelming. It is “beautiful, colourful, intense, emotional, incredibly alive.” Their posts showcase everyday Mumbai-  bustling markets filled with fresh produce and flower garlands, artisans at work, lively neighbourhood celebrations, and the hum of public transit. These glimpses reflect a city that is social, welcoming, and rich in traditions.

Raising toddlers in a megacity might sound daunting, but the family describes it as surprisingly smooth. Videos show Lila and Eeli riding the Metro, playing in public spaces, and being warmly embraced by locals. “This is our everyday life now – with two small children,” Touko explained. “And the India we experience every day is caring, vibrant, and welcoming. We feel safe here. We feel good here.”

Their perspective challenges the dominant narrative that often focuses on India’s socioeconomic struggles. While acknowledging that every country has its challenges, they highlight the warmth, safety, and sense of community they’ve found in Mumbai.

The response online has been overwhelmingly positive. Many viewers expressed gratitude for this refreshing portrayal, noting how it counters the negative publicity India often receives abroad. Comments celebrated Mumbai as “special” and “one of the safest cities in the world,” while others thanked the family for showing the “real heart of India.”

For Touko and Janika, the move was more than a relocation- it was an embrace of a new rhythm of life. By sharing their journey, they’ve reminded the world that India is not just what headlines suggest; it is a place of warmth, culture, and everyday beauty.
