What happened on July 2 in Hathras?

Thousands gathered for a satsang hosted by local preacher Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari, aka Bhole Baba. To seek his blessings, many people fell on the surface after the event while trying to collect soil the preacher had walked on before he left the venue. This resulted in a stampede, and scores of people succumbed in turn.

Yogi Adityanath, UP Chief Minister, said that among those killed, six were from other states – four from Haryana and one each from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The UP CM and the organizers held the “sevadars” (helpers) responsible for this tragic incident, who couldn’t manage the crowd. The devotees died one by one as the sevadars eloped from the stampede site.
