During the DC vs RR match in IPL 2025, Munaf Patel was seen fighting with the fourth umpire on the sidelines.

A video went viral in which Munaf Patel, the former India pacer, had an animated discussion with the 4th umpire, which involved many hand movements. He can be seen apparently arguing with the umpire. This prompted the BCCI to take action against him.

BCCI takes strict action against Munaf Patel.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India took strict action against Munaf Patel, the former India pacer and now bowling coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025. He was punished for getting involved in a heated argument with the fourth umpire during Delhi Capital’s IPL 2025 home match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday. He was fined 25% of his match fees and slapped with one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

What did BCCI state in the case?

BCCI said in a release, “Munaf Patel, Bowling Coach, Delhi Capitals, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated One Demerit Point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on Wednesday.” BCCI added that Munaf Patel was found guilty of a Level 1 offence for which the match referee’s decision is final. The release added, “Munaf Patel admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 – which pertains to the conduct contrary to the game’s spirit – and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”

Munaf Patel was punished because he was seen arguing with the 4th umpire during the match on the sidelines. Though the exact reason for the altercation couldn’t be determined, it was, in all likelihood, regarding Munaf’s request of sending a 12th on the field with drinks to pass some instructions to the DC players in the middle.
