Scaloni’s men must find inspiration beyond Messi against disciplined Switzerland.

Argentina’s journey through the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been anything but smooth. The defending champions have survived two dramatic encounters, first needing extra time to edge past Cape Verde, and then staging a remarkable comeback against Egypt after trailing by two goals for most of the match. Lionel Messi, at 39, has been the heartbeat of their campaign, scoring eight goals already, but the heavy reliance on him has exposed the team’s limitations.

Unlike their triumphant 2022 run, where Argentina thrived on collective movement and fluid attacking patterns, this side has looked predictable. Too often, attacks end with Messi carrying the burden alone, while teammates wait for his magic. Against Egypt, his equaliser sparked the turnaround, but asking him to rescue the team in every knockout clash is a dangerous gamble.

Switzerland, their quarter-final opponents, are unlikely to be as forgiving. Led by captain Granit Xhaka, the Swiss boast one of the tournament’s most disciplined defences, conceding only four goals in five matches and keeping clean sheets in the knockout rounds. Their compact structure and ability to close spaces could frustrate Argentina’s attempts to funnel everything through Messi. As Xhaka admitted, stopping Messi completely may be impossible, but Switzerland plans to limit his influence by crowding him out and forcing Argentina to look elsewhere for inspiration.

This is where Lionel Scaloni faces a crucial decision. Injecting pace and unpredictability through Giuliano Simeone on the right flank could stretch Switzerland’s backline, while rediscovering Julian Alvarez’s trademark runs down the left channel might revive the attacking variety that defined Argentina’s 2022 triumph. Without such adjustments, Argentina risks becoming too one-dimensional.

Adding to the tension are lingering controversies. Egypt’s camp accused officials of favouring Argentina in their Round of 16 clash, suggesting tournament organisers wanted Messi to advance deeper. Scaloni and his players have avoided the noise, focusing instead on the challenge ahead.
