Escalating strikes push civilian casualties to record highs.

The war between Russia and Ukraine, now in its fifth year, has shifted dramatically from trench battles to the skies. Drone warfare has become the defining feature of this phase of the conflict, and civilians are increasingly paying the price. What began as sporadic strikes has evolved into relentless campaigns targeting infrastructure, warehouses, and even ordinary homes.

Ukraine has rapidly advanced its drone technology, enabling strikes deep inside Russian territory. Once limited to oil refineries, these attacks now regularly hit energy facilities, tankers, and substations. In recent months, Kyiv has widened its focus to commercial targets, including Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. More than twenty of its warehouses have been destroyed, causing billions in losses and killing several workers. Ukrainian officials argue that the company is a legitimate target because it supplies goods to Russian troops.

Russia has responded in kind. Ukrainian warehouses belonging to Rozetka, a major electronics retailer, have been repeatedly struck by missiles and drones. This tit-for-tat escalation has blurred the line between military and civilian targets, leaving ordinary people caught in the crossfire.

The human toll is staggering. According to the United Nations, June 2026 saw the highest civilian casualty count in Ukraine since 2022. In the first half of this year alone, nearly 1,400 civilians were killed and close to 8,000 injured- a 37 percent increase compared to 2025. Russia, too, reports hundreds of civilian deaths, though its nightly bombardments of Ukraine far exceed the strikes it suffers at home. Moscow has averaged more than 170 attacks per day, compared to Kyiv’s 28.

Beyond large-scale assaults, smaller drones have been used in chilling ways. In one widely shared video, a Russian drone appeared to stalk a vegetable seller named Yuri before detonating beside him. Such incidents have fuelled fears of what residents describe as “drone safaris,” where civilians feel hunted in their own towns.

Missile strikes compound the crisis. Russia launched 139 ballistic missiles in July alone, overwhelming Ukraine’s limited air defences. Patriot interceptors, the only reliable system against such weapons, remain scarce despite repeated appeals from President Volodymyr Zelensky to Western allies.

Diplomatic efforts have stalled. Despite high-profile meetings involving U.S. President Donald Trump, Zelensky, and Vladimir Putin, no breakthrough has been achieved. With parallel conflicts, including tensions involving Iran, global attention is divided. For millions of civilians, however, the war is not a distant geopolitical struggle- it is a daily reality of fear, destruction, and loss.
