Exercise is one of the most essential tools for good health, but can too much of it be harmful? Dr Naveen Bhamri explicates when overtraining may put extra strain on the heart.

Regular exercise is extensively recognized as one of the best ways to improve overall health, but can there be too much of a good thing? According to Dr Naveen Bhamri, vice chairman and HOD, cardiology, Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, while physical activity is highly beneficial for obese people, excessive exercise, particularly intense strength training, may carry certain risks. It should always be done with observation and limitation to maintain good health.

 Dr Naveen shared a video on his Instagram on May 17, in which he addressed the common belief that more exercise always leads to better health. “More exercise means better health. This is not always true.”

Dr Bhamri talks about the World Health Organisation, which recommends that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise each week for cardiovascular health.

However, Dr says each person varies, and some studies have found potential concerns among athletes who engage in very high levels of endurance training, such as marathon runners, triathletes and endurance cyclists.

He emphasized numerous red-flag signs that should not be ignored, including chest pain, palpitations and extreme breathlessness during exercise. “If you experience chest pain, palpitations or extreme breathlessness while exercising, stop immediately,” he advised.

Dr advised doing regular physical activity daily to stay active and fit.
