Why New Delhi’s credibility could be its biggest advantage in the global space race.
India’s space ambitions are rapidly evolving beyond government laboratories and long‑term missions. Today, they are part of boardroom discussions, startup strategies, and even geopolitical bargaining. Yet, when the global space race is discussed, China’s name often precedes India’s — largely because of the sheer scale of Beijing’s investment.
Yashas Karanam, Co‑Founder and COO of Bellatrix Aerospace, points out that China commands a far wider range of space capabilities, supported by complex missions and a budget that dwarfs India’s. “The biggest difference is the scale of investment,” he explains. But he also highlights China’s weakness: trust. Despite its technological advances, Chinese firms remain closely tied to state institutions, which fuels suspicion among global partners. As a result, China may build more, but struggles to sell more. India, by contrast, enjoys credibility and openness, making it a trusted partner worldwide.
Talent Shifts and Startup Growth
In recent years, ISRO scientists have left government service. While some frame this as foreign poaching, Karanam disagrees. The real driver, he says, is the pay gap between government salaries and private‑sector opportunities. Many of these scientists are now joining Indian startups, strengthening the domestic ecosystem rather than draining it abroad.
India’s Place in the Global Order
Globally, the United States remains the undisputed leader, followed by Europe and China, with Russia close behind. Karanam believes India can realistically aim for third place, or at least secure a strong fourth. He cites India’s cost‑effective manufacturing and engineering talent as competitive advantages, noting that Indian firms are already delivering on par with international standards.
The Trillion‑Dollar Space Economy
Karanam breaks down the future of the space economy into three major streams:
- Telecom and connectivity: satellite internet and global constellations.
- Defence and surveillance: demand driven by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
- New‑age applications: in‑orbit servicing and experimental concepts like space‑based data centres.
For ordinary citizens, the benefits are already embedded in daily life- from GPS navigation to disaster response and, soon, seamless internet access in remote areas.
The Satellite Revolution
The industry has shifted from massive geostationary satellites to compact Low Earth Orbit (LEO) systems, offering sharper imagery and faster connectivity. The next frontier lies in ultra‑low orbits around 200 kilometres, where propulsion technology becomes critical. Bellatrix is working to solve this challenge, positioning India at the heart of the next big leap in space innovation.
