Karnataka highway accident: Five friends were killed after a car crashed into a parked lorry

The group of friends were travelling from Hanagal to Challakere when the accident occurred, police said.

A horrific accident happened late Thursday night when a group of five friends were killed in an accident in Karnataka. The accident occurred at 9:45 pm on the Beedur–Srirangapatna stretch of the highway in Molakalmuru, when their car crashed into a parked lorry.

According to police officials, the victims were travelling from Hanagal to Challakere when the accident occurred around 9:45 pm on the Beedur–Srirangapatna stretch of the highway. The deceased have been identified as Raghavendra (40), Pramod (36), Rudresh (30), Somashekhar (35), and Mallikarjuna (35), all residents of Challakere. Deputy Superintendent of Police Satyanarayana Rao said preliminary investigations suggest that the car was moving at high speed when one of its tyres suddenly burst. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off and crash into the rear side of a lorry parked along the roadside. “The impact was extremely severe. The car was completely crushed after hitting the stationary lorry,” the officer said. The collision was so intense that all the five occupants died on the spot.

Rescue operation was carried out with help from locals.

After receiving information about the accident, a team from the Molakalmuru police station rushed to the spot. Residents also joined the rescue efforts, helping them recover the bodies trapped inside the damaged vehicle. The bodies were later shifted to a nearby government hospital for postmortem examinations. Family members and relatives of the victims reportedly gathered at the hospital soon after the news spread, creating an atmosphere of deep sorrow.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the BharatiyaNyayaSanhita (BNS), 2023, and further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
