Simple washing habits to reduce hair fall and keep hair strong.

Hair fall is one of the most common beauty concerns today, often leaving women anxious when they notice strands collecting in the shower or on their brush. Stress, hormonal fluctuations, poor diet, pollution, and frequent styling are among the leading culprits. In a recent episode of the All About Her podcast, actress Soha Ali Khan joined Kritika Kamra and celebrity hairstylist Yianni Tsapatori to explore what’s normal and how to care for hair more effectively.

Understanding normal hair fall

Tsapatori reassured listeners that losing between 50 and 100 strands daily is perfectly natural. However, he emphasized the importance of paying attention to patterns. If shedding feels heavier than usual, he suggested visiting a salon once a month for a scalp analysis to uncover potential causes.

The right way to wash hair

When it comes to washing, Tsapatori advised focusing shampoo only on the scalp, using fingertips rather than nails, and never neglecting the crown area. Contrary to popular belief, shampoo does not need to sit on the scalp for minutes before rinsing. Instead, gentle massaging and thorough cleaning are key. He also cautioned against rough towel‑drying, recommending a final rinse with filtered water and avoiding very hot water. Air‑drying with a leave‑in conditioner, he noted, helps maintain hydration and softness.

Building a routine to prevent breakage

Consistency is crucial. Tsapatori recommended choosing two shampoos that suit your hair type and alternating them every four months to maintain balance. After shampooing, he suggested applying a nourishing mask while the hair cuticles are open, allowing deeper penetration. Following up with conditioner then seals in moisture. His advice was clear: don’t overload your hair with products, and avoid experimenting excessively with new formulas. Treatments like minoxidil should only be considered once the root cause of hair fall is identified.

Back to basics

For Tsapatori, the secret lies in simplicity. “Doing the basics right is the best way forward,” he said, stressing that healthy hair care doesn’t require complicated routines. With mindful washing, consistent product use, and gentle handling, hair can remain strong, hydrated, and resilient against everyday stressors.
