Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has resumed after weeks of disruption, following a breakthrough peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that vessels carrying oil and other goods have started moving freely through the strategic waterway, signaling a major step toward stability in the region.

Trump, posting on his Truth Social account, celebrated the development: “Ships are starting to move, many loaded up with oil, out of the Strait of Hormuz. They are going along the Southern ‘Highway,’ which is totally safe, secure, and pristine.” His remarks came just days before the formal signing of a peace accord scheduled for June 19, which both sides say will mark the beginning of a new chapter in West Asia.

According to reports, the draft agreement includes several key provisions: easing of US sanctions, renewed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, and the lifting of restrictions on Iranian ports. The deal also outlines measures aimed at ending regional hostilities, which have long destabilized the area and threatened global energy supplies.

Trump underscored the significance of the pact by ordering the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade imposed on April 12. The blockade was introduced after ceasefire talks in Pakistan collapsed, leaving dozens of vessels stranded and raising concerns about oil shortages worldwide. Declaring the deal “complete,” Trump wrote: “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

US Vice President JD Vance added that Washington expects Iran to keep the Strait open without imposing tolls on passing vessels. “We expect that the strait is going to be opened in a toll-free way for the long term, and that’s the sort of thing we’re going to figure out in these technical negotiations,” he told CNBC.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime chokepoint between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. Roughly one-fifth of global oil trade passes through it, making any disruption a matter of international concern. The reopening of the Strait not only relieves immediate pressure on global markets but also signals a rare moment of cooperation between the US and Iran after years of hostility.

If the peace deal is signed as planned, it could mark a turning point in regional geopolitics, offering hope for reduced tensions and renewed economic activity across West Asia.
