Rising tensions in Hormuz as indiansailors caught in crossfire

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Iran, accusing it of attempting a drone strike on Indian vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the alleged incident as “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE,” though he did not clarify which ships were targeted. Iranian authorities have yet to issue a formal response.

The remarks come amid a series of military operations in the region that have directly impacted Indian crews. On June 8, US forces turned off the Palau-flagged tanker Marivex, which carried 24 Indian sailors. All crew members were rescued unharmed. Two days later, another Palau-registered vessel, Settebello, was struck, leaving three Indian sailors dead among its 24-member crew. A third ship, Jalveer, sailing under the Guinea-Bissau flag with 20 Indians aboard, was attacked on Thursday.

India has expressed growing concerns over the safety of its nationals. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks twice in one week after repeated incidents involving Indian seafarers. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Shipping issued a fresh advisory urging nearly 18,000 Indian sailors operating in the Gulf of Oman and Hormuz waters to remain on high alert.

Trump also commented on the peace truce with Iran. He accused Iran of leaking “false terms” of ongoing negotiations, insisting that the details shared by Iranian media “bear no relation to the truth.” According to Trump, Tehran has failed to negotiate in good faith.

Iranian outlets, including Mehr News Agency and Fars News, reported on a draft 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the three-month conflict that has disrupted global trade and energy markets. The proposal reportedly includes US sanctions relief and the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets. Still, it does not impose new restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme — a sticking point in the dispute.
