In the Lok Sabha, the minister spoke about tightening laws against vulgar content on social media.
On Wednesday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during the Winter session of the parliament in the Lok Sabha in New Delhi spoke about the importance of curbing vulgar content on social media platforms. The Information and Broadcasting Minister said that the Parliamentary Standing Committeeshould take up the issue and also called for a consensus to frame more strict laws in this regard.

The minister during the Question Hour of the Winter session of the parliament in the Lok Sabha said that earlier there were editorial checks and it was decided, whether something was right or wrong but those checks have now ended. Social media has become a platform for freedom of press but it is also uncontrolled and there is vulgar content.

He added that there is a need to make existing laws stringent to curb vulgar content on social media platforms.He responded to questions by BJP member Arun Govil about existing mechanisms to check telecast of vulgar and sex-related content through social media platforms illegally. He also responded to questions of whether the government proposes to make the existing laws more stringent, given that the laws currently aren’t much effective.
