Air India Flight 171 crashed seconds after takeoff in Ahmedabad, bound for London Gatwick Airport. In one of the most devastating aviation disasters in all these years, one survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, escaped death and walked out of the plane. Vishwash, an Indian-origin British national, had his family members in Leicester, central England, oscillate between joy at his escape and grief at the loss of his brother Ajay. Hiren Kantilal, Ramesh’s cousin, said, “We are happy Viswash has been saved, but on the other hand, we are just heartbroken about Ajay.” Ajay was on the same flight, seated on 11J, while Ramesh was on 11A. Their younger brother, Nayan, said that the two were returning home after a vacation in India. Vishwash, in his statement, said, “Luckily, the portion of the plane where I was seated fell on the ground floor of the hostel premises after the plane crash-landed. When I saw that the door of the plane was broken, I told myself I can try and get out.”

51 other British nationals were on the ill-fated flight.

There were 51 other British nationals on the Air India 171 Flight. One of them was Hardik Avaiya, 27 and Vibhooti Patel, 28. Both were Leicester residents and had gone to India to celebrate their engagement. Arjun Patoliya, one of the victims, had visited India to fulfil his wife’s dying wish to immerse her ashes in Narmada. He is survived by his two daughters, aged four and eight. The two girls were in London at the time of the crash. The Muslim community in Gloucester paid tributes to Akeel Nanabawa, who, with his wife and 4-year-old child, were the victims. Raxa Modha, 55, was accompanied by her husband, Kishor, to India. A person aware of the matter said, “Kishor wanted to be in his hometown in his final days. He died on April 26, and Raxa, along with her daughter-in-law and grandson, was returning to the UK.”
