Masala chai has officially been declared the world’s best tea by TasteAtlas in its May 2026 list of the Top 100 Teas Worldwide. For many tea lovers, this recognition only confirms what they already knew—India’s beloved spiced brew reigns supreme.
Tea in India is far more than a drink. It’s a daily ritual, a pause in the workday, a companion on railway platforms, and often a reason for conversation. From roadside stalls to elegant tea lounges, chai is woven into the country’s social fabric.
A Global Celebration of Chai
What makes this recognition even more special is how chai has become a symbol of cultural exchange. Whether it’s enjoyed in bustling Indian streets or trendy cafés abroad, masala chai carries with it the warmth of tradition and the spice of innovation. Its rise to the top of the global rankings is not just about taste—it’s about the story of India’s tea heritage finding a place in the world’s collective palate.
Indian Teas Shine on the Global Stage
Several Indian varieties secured high positions in the rankings, reflecting the diversity of the nation’s tea culture:
- Masala Chai — 1st place
- Darjeeling Tea — 6th place
- Assam Chai — 13th place
- Sulaimani Chai (Kerala) — 39th place
- Kangra Tea (Himachal Pradesh) — 41st place
- Noon Chai (Jammu & Kashmir) — 43rd place
Each of these teas carries its own character, from the boldness of Assam to the floral delicacy of Darjeeling, and the salty pink Noon Chai that surprises first-time drinkers.
Global Competition
India’s teas were joined by other celebrated brews: Japan’s Hojicha (2nd), Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Black Tea (3rd), Japan’s Sencha (4th), and China’s Pu erh (5th). Together, they highlight the rich traditions of tea across Asia.
Tea Estates in the Spotlight
TasteAtlas also recognized iconic tea estates. Among them:
- Makaibari Tea Estate in Kurseong, West Bengal, founded in 1859 and considered one of the world’s oldest tea factories.
- Halmari Tea Estate in Assam, with over a century of heritage, renowned for its strong and flavorful Assam teas.
More Than a Beverage
For India, tea is not just about taste—it’s about connection, culture, and identity. With masala chai now crowned the world’s best, the phrase chai pe charcha has truly gone global.
