Sports ministry grants FMSCI provisional recognition to boost 2028 return.

India’s dream of hosting Formula 1 again has taken a significant step forward with the Sports Ministry granting provisional National Sports Federation (NSF) recognition to the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). This decision strengthens FMSCI’s authority as the official body for motorsport in the country and aligns it with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.

The recognition, announced on July 23, 2026, is conditional upon strict adherence to governance, financial transparency, and anti-doping regulations. The Ministry has clarified that the status could be revoked if FMSCI fails to meet these standards or misrepresents facts.

Building the Roadmap for F1’s Return

To accelerate preparations, the government has formed a Task Force comprising representatives from the Sports Ministry, FMSCI, the Uttar Pradesh government, and the owners of the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. This panel will evaluate infrastructure needs, operational challenges, and the broader economic and tourism benefits of hosting Formula 1. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has set an ambitious target of bringing F1 back to India by 2028, signalling strong political will behind the project.

India’s Motorsport Legacy and Challenges

India previously staged Formula 1 races between 2011 and 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit. However, taxation disputes and financial hurdles forced the event off the calendar. Since then, multiple attempts to revive the race have stalled, but the latest developments suggest a more coordinated effort between government and motorsport authorities.

Fanbase Growth Fuels Momentum

India’s rapidly expanding fanbase backs the push for F1’s return. Formula One reports that the sport’s following in India has surged from 79 million in December 2025 to 98 million by mid-2026, highlighting its growing appeal. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has acknowledged India’s importance to the championship, though he emphasized that a successful comeback will depend on sustainable investment and strong local partnerships.

With official recognition now in place, FMSCI is positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s motorsport future. The next two years will be crucial as the Task Force works to ensure India can meet the logistical, financial, and commercial demands of hosting Formula 1 once again. If successful, the 2028 race could mark a historic return of the sport to one of its most promising emerging markets.
