Massive assault cripples fuel supply, disrupts transport, and intensifies economic strain on Russia.
Moscow witnessed one of the most dramatic escalations of the war when nearly 200 Ukrainian drones swarmed the capital, striking multiple targets and igniting a massive blaze at the Moscow Oil Refinery. Located just 15 kilometres from the Kremlin, the refinery—owned by Gazprom Neft—was hit by at least seven drones, sending towering plumes of black smoke across the city. The facility is crucial to Moscow’s energy needs, supplying around 70 percent of its petrol, and its damage marks a significant blow to Russia’s fuel infrastructure.
The overnight attack, described by Russian state media as the largest on Moscow in two years, triggered widespread disruption. Traffic was halted on the city’s ring road, and operations at all four major airports: Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovskywere suspended. Beyond the refinery, drones struck a residential tower, an industrial site, the Sadovod shopping complex, and several private homes. Despite the scale of the assault, no air raid sirens were activated, leaving residents in panic as explosions echoed across the capital.
Moscow’s mayor reported that air defences intercepted 194 drones over the city, while Russia’s Défense Ministry claimed 555 were shot down nationwide. In retaliation, Russia launched seven missiles and 239 drones at Ukraine, hitting energy facilities and civilian structures in Kyiv and Poltava regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the strikes, calling them a justified response to Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities.
This attack is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy that has increasingly targeted Russia’s oil refineries since 2024. By mid-2026, Ukraine had struck 24 of Russia’s 33 major refineries, repeatedly forcing shutdowns and slashing output.
Russia, the world’s third-largest oil producer, now faces mounting pressure as it turns to fuel imports to offset shortages. The refinery strike underscores Ukraine’s determination to weaken Moscow’s war economy by crippling its energy sector, while also signalling that the conflict has reached new levels of intensity inside Russia’s heartland.
