Monsoon Delay Linked to Weak Indian Ocean Activity and Emerging El Nino

Scientists believe the delayed progress of the monsoon is closely connected to unusual conditions over the Indian Ocean and the emerging El Nino pattern in the Pacific. Normally, warm ocean waters around India help generate clouds and low-pressure systems that support monsoon winds and bring widespread rainfall. This year, however, the Indian Ocean has shown weaker-than-usual weather activity, resulting in reduced cloud formation and fewer rain-bearing systems.

Satellite images have revealed broad stretches of clear skies over the ocean south of India, indicating that the atmosphere is not producing enough disturbances to strengthen the monsoon current. As a result, rainfall has been slow to advance and has not yet spread fully across Kerala and several other regions of the country.

In response, the central government has gone into alert mode. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that a high-level review meeting was held to assess the status of the southwest monsoon and evaluate its possible effects on agriculture. He emphasized that protecting farmers remains a top priority.

The government is preparing for possible disruptions by promoting quality seeds, moisture conservation, efficient water management, and alternative crop strategies. Officials also noted that reservoir water levels are currently better than normal, which offers some reassurance for the upcoming Kharif sowing season.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has also warned that El Nino conditions are developing because of unusual sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean. According to its latest outlook, there is an 80 percent chance of El Nino forming between June and August 2026, and a very high probability that it will continue until November. The WMO added that the event may range from moderate to strong intensity, though its exact timing and impact are still uncertain.

Overall, scientists and officials are watching the situation closely, as delayed rains and a strengthening El Nino could influence farming, water resources, and weather patterns across India in the weeks ahead.
